Over Tightened Faucets

Over tightening of Faucets: This is a common mistake we all make, including myself. The constant over tightening of faucets creates premature wear on the gaskets of your faucets. While not all faucets use rubber seals, many older homes do — especially at your water spigots. To ensure that you do not over tighten, open your faucets\valves all the way and then slowly close the valves until no drips are present. Most faucets and spigots vary throughout the house, so try to be aware of those that require more tightening than others. Those are the valves to keep your eye on. Sometimes these leaky faucets also create pipe hammering\vibration in the house when you open other valves.

Clearing and Cleaning out Dish Washers

Be sure to clean the strainer at the bottom of the washer after every wash. This will ensure that you do not have standing water in the dishwasher and will help prevent bacteria and the like from propagating. I like pulling the top drawer on the dishwasher out a bit to allow the door to stand open overnight so things can dry out.
